Santa Comes to Town!
On December 18, 2009, Benchmark’s Michael Cornwell, CMCA, played Santa Claus for one of the Las Vegas Valley’s “at-risk” Elementary Schools. It happened to be a warm winter day in Las Vegas, so the Santa’s suit was hot, but Michael made jokes and visited with each child as if he had just flown in from the North Pole. The most popular Christmas request was for a Wii, of course. One 5th grader surprised us all by requesting “World Peace”. We later were informed that the family had just lost their home and most likely “Santa” would not be visiting this Christmas. In another classroom, someone mentioned that Santa wasn’t fat enough to be the “real” Santa. With a Jolly Chuckle, Santa explained that he’d been trying out all those Wii Fit up at the North Pole. You know Santa tests all the toys before delivering them to the boys and girls!
Through 22 classrooms, we traveled with Candy Canes and Well Wishes and caused a stampede on the playground. Unfortunately, it was the principal’s last day, she was retiring. She traveled with us from classroom to classroom. When Santa would say, "You all are on the nice list and I've checked it three times," Ms. Archer would joke, “But you didn’t check with me yet!” Santa politely explained the new procedures at the North Pole that he no longer checks with the School Principal - Santa got a "woohoo!" from the classes.
Red Rock Elementary is the adopted school by the Nevada Chapter CAI, Community Outreach Committee. The Community Outreach Committee has partnered with the school district to help student achievement, self-concept and understanding of the resources and opportunities in the community. The school was selected because of its special needs. Red Rock Elementary serves 660 students and operates on $24,000 per year in Nevada Tax Dollars. The remainder of its operating budget is from Government Grants, Private Business Donations, and the Focus School Project. Shannon Hymas from Farmer’s Insurance played Mrs. Claus.
